Identifying Security Failures

You spend a lot of time getting ready for the holidays from decorating your home to buying and wrapping presents. Fortunately, there are two things you can do to ensure you and your family, as well as the inside of your home, stay safe this year.

Home Security System

You have many options when it comes to home security systems, and the choices can be daunting. To make things a little easier for you, below are three different types of security systems you can choose from.

Monitored

The security company will install a central control panel in your home. They will then install sensors on things like your doors and windows, along with motion detectors outside your home. You use the control panel to control all of these sensors.

When your alarm system is turned on and a sensor is triggered, the system will send a signal to the security company's call center through your telephone line. The security company will immediately call you to make sure there is an actual emergency. If you do not answer your phone, they will contact the proper authorities to come to you home.

Unmonitored Security System

With this type of system, a very loud siren will go off inside your home if the alarm is set off. The loud siren may also go off outside your home. This system works well to alert your neighbors to contact the police if the alarm goes off and you are not home. It also works well to alert you if someone breaks into your home in the middle of the night while you are sleeping.

Wireless Security System

A wireless security system includes things like motion detectors, motion beams, sensors, and security cameras. For example, you could place motion detectors near your front door so a light will come on when someone approaches. A security camera allows you to see who is outside your door from inside your home. All of this can be purchased at a hardware or home improvement store. They are generally easy to install in your home, and you will not have to pay any monitoring fees to a security company.

Fire Protection

You should make sure you have fire protection in your home, as according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), 30% of all home fires are during the months of December, January, and February.

Install some smoke detectors in your home. You can also purchase a fire hose foam kit from a home improvement store. If you have trouble finding this kit, ask your local fire department if they know where you can find one. This allows you to spray a special foam on your roof, deck, walls, and even inside your home to suppress the fire until emergency personnel arrive on the scene.

You should also have a fire pump and hose. This is a portable gasoline powered engine that uses a high pressure water pump to spray water out of a hose. It pumps out a high volume of water to put out a fire whether that be inside or outside. In most cases, you can adjust the volume pressure. For example, if your tree is on fire, you would not need as much water pressure to put out the fire as you would if an entire room was on fire.
